My personal dilemma
When I started building furniture it was my "therapy", what I did when I didn't want to deal with corporate politics or the pressures of getting the "next thing" launched. Then my circumstances changed and I decided to shift the hobby into my full time business. (not the first time I turned a hobby into a career).
I did all the things you are supposed to do when starting a business, the research, the business plan, investments and projections etc, and took the dive!
I was able to start the business using my own savings and live for about a year and a half on that. And at this point the business is stable and sustained. However as I work through the growing pains I find one critical issue....
There is a saying, if you are working IN the business you are not working ON the business. Well I find myself in that situation where I am working in so much that I don't have allot of time for ON. That being when I look at how I could change things to resolve that, find that I don't WANT to hand over the craft. In fact I would rather do fewer projects but do ones that are more fulfilling...
Well herein is the problem, I still need to eat! more importantly my wife would like to keep a roof over her head :)
So, do I take the steps I need to so the company can grow, or do I keep it small knowing it limits my financial opportunities?
For now I took a 3rd option! Just start yet another business! That's right, start a new business that I don't feel the passion about the "product" (though still do feel that for providing the best service), so that I can work ON the new business and grow it into a money making monster! and then I can keep making beautiful things but being more particular.
anyway that's my story for now, if I get comments on this and people want to know more then I can tell how the new business story is going. If no comments ill know its only interesting to me and i'll move on to more Tips and Tricks and the like.
